“THE LOST GENERATION”

Oblique Angle / Veronica Lindemann

As a child growing up in New York, Veronica Lindemann had plans to be a children’s book illustrator but as she matured it was Europe more than America that informed her work. Lindemann attended school in France and spent five years living in Cadaques, Catalonia, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, with her then partner Pico Harnden.

She was drawn to the region’s prehistoric sites, the natural spirituality of the place, its light, geography and the sense of timelessness Cadaques possessed. The couple lived amid an olive grove that was burnt by brush fire upon their arrival. She remembers being struck by the hardy resilience of the trees and how their deep roots allowed them to regenerate, but only with constant care through pruning would the tree bear fruit again. During this period the couple traveled extensively across Europe, India and Morocco. Images and colors from these experiences resonate in her work.

Now based in New York Lindemann sees her current work as an extension of those travels, both externally and internally. Her work is also influenced by her love of film and its power to manipulate time and to offer parallel views of the same world. Her latest pieces are a way of communicating the connections she sees between the physical and the spiritual world.
